10th ANNUAL ONSLOW BAY OPEN

Even 20 MPH winds and 6-foot seas could not deter the king mackerel fishermen from participating in the 10th Annual Onslow Bay Open King Mackerel Tournament on August 14. The fish did not cooperate – only 22 fish were weighed at Casper’s Dry Stack Marina in Swansboro, the second lowest total in 10 years.

The winners, Rube, and son Barrett McMullan, of the Ocean Isle Fishing Center, in Ocean Isle, NC caught a 40.77 king mackerel to claim the $15,507 first prize. The McMullan's are the current SKA record-holders, catching a 74 lb. king at the SKA Nationals in Biloxi, Miss. last November.

Other locals that placed were: Phil Croom of Emerald Isle who finished 8th, Mike and Cindy Garb of Jacksonville who placed 9th, Renee Wallace of Swansboro, Lady Angler, Benson Ybanez of Cape Carteret, who placed 2nd in the Dolphin TWT, and The Right One Baby who placed 3rd in the Dolphin TWT. Roy Jarman on Team Bluewater Bound of Jacksonville got 10th with his king and also won the 10th Anniversary Award which garnered him an additional $1000 from sponsor, American Fishing Wire.

Nate Owens, manager of the Swansboro Piggly Wiggly was the celebrity weighmaster. Greg and Mindy Dennis of The Reel Outdoors of Emerald Isle were recognized for being a tournament sponsor for every year that the
tournament has been operating. We came close to our $200,000 goal for funds raised, but fell a few dollars short.
